Event Options

All events finish at Windsor Reserve, Devonport:

  • Beach Hopper – 6 km Run / Walk (starts at Takapuna Beach)
  • Bay Scrambler – 11 km Run / Walk (starts at Milford Beach)
  • Mini Monty – 17 km Run / Walk (starts at Browns Bay)
  • Mid Monty – 22 km Run (starts at Long Bay)
  • Full Monty – 33 km & Teams Relay Run (starts at Arkles Bay, Whangaparoa)

 

Parking

All events finish at Windsor Reserve, Devonport:

Take the Ferry:

Certainly the coolest way to travel is to catch the ferry from downtown Auckland. The Saturday morning service begins at 6.15am and runs to and from downtown Auckland every 30 minutes at the tie of writing. Please check the ferry timetable with Fullers or on the Auckland Transport Journey Planner web site before your journey.

Take the Bus:

Devonport village is a major transport hub and several bus lines run directly to the ferry terminal, from where it’s a hop, skip and jump to the event venue. Check on the Auckland Transport Journey Planner web site for the best options from your location.

Driving and Parking info:

If you will be parking in Devonport, arrive at the venue in plenty of time and expect a 10-15 minute walk from your parking space to the finish line. Try for un-metered street parking on the major roads; King Edward Parade (east of Buchanan St), Queens Parade (west of Anne St) or up on Calliope Rd. You may also find street parking in the residential streets outside of the centre. Please be sure to check parking signs and comply with the parking rules posted.

There is limited parking at each of the five event start points; please remember you will need to get dropped off or have a ride back to your vehicle after your race as there are no post-event buses back to the start points.

 

Event Base

The event base, and finish point for all event options will be located in Windsor Reserve, King Edward Parade in Devonport.

This is the best location for spectators to position themselves to see friends and family finishing their event.

Event Briefing & Start Times

Run and Walk

There will be a participant briefing 10 minutes before every start. You MUST attend.

  • Beach Hopper (6km) - start time Midday at Takapuna Beach. Start location – the southern end of Takapuna Beach (end of Hauraki Road).
  • Bay Scrambler (11 km) – start time 11.30am at Milford Beach. Start location – Northern end of Milford Beach (Milford Reserve).
  • Mini Monty Walk (17km) – start time 11.00am at Browns Bay. Start location – Northern end of Browns Bay Beach (next to the boat ramp / police station).
  • Mini Monty Run (17km) – start time 11.30am at Browns Bay. Start location – Northern end of Browns Bay Beach (next to the boat ramp / police station).
  • Mid Monty Run (22km) – start time 10.00am at Long Bay. Start location – Southern end of Long Bay.
  • Full Monty Run (33km) Individual & Teams – start time 8.30am at Arkles Bay, Whangaparoa. Start location – Middle of Arkles Bay.

High Tide: 7.15am (3.2m)

Low Tide: 1.19pm (0.7m)

Please note: Depending on what time you get to the 2 swim sections, the swims could be anything from 100m to 300m on an outgoing tide, so it is very important that only confident swimmers only do the 33km event.

Safety

There will be ample water-based support on the water (3x Surf Life Saving rescue boats), with a particular focus around the two river crossings. If you’re in trouble on either of these two sections, please raise your hand and our water safety crew will be very happy to provide assistance in getting you across. You will not be disqualified if you fit into this category, but please don’t use the water safety crew to get a free ride, and save you some energy – they’ll keep you in the boat for longer!

 

Bus Transport

If you wish to take a bus to the start line and have not yet booked it, please do so below!

All event buses will depart from King Edward Parade, next to Windsor Reserve in Devonport.

Please note: You will not receive a bus ticket as such. We will have everyone’s name on a check list as you get on the bus at Devonport. Please aim to arrive at Windsor Reserve, Devonport at least 30 minutes before your scheduled bus departure time.

If you would like to purchase a bus to the start of your event from Windsor Reserve, this can be done while entering your chosen event or by purchasing a Ticket below.
If you have already entered, not a problem! Click on your registration link and scroll down to financial summary and click the green add optional items button to add it to your purchase.

Note: There are NO buses after the event from Windsor Reserve, Devonport back to the start line to collect your car so if you intend to catch a lift to your designated start location please ensure you have organised a lift back to your car post event.

Prizegiving / Post Event

Once you’ve made it down the beautiful North Shore coastline to the event base at Windsor Reserve in Devonport you’ll be able to relax in the park in the sun (hopefully!) with a cold Speight’s, sausage ($2 donation to Hospice North Shore so bring a couple of dollars) possibly a spot prize and enjoy the music that will be playing. Prize giving will commence at 2.00pm at the finish line.

Massage

Marcus and Kirsten will be easing any pain away with massages for only $15. Look for them in the green striped tent!

If some of the family aren’t participating make sure you tell them to come down and enjoy the post-race festivities!

Course Information

Beach Hopper – 6km Run / Walk

The Beach Hopper is a course designed for coastal running first-timers, families, kids and those who’re just keen to ‘give it a go!’. This short course event will take participants from the spectacular white sand beach at Takapuna south along Takapuna Beach, around the rocks to Cheltenham Beach then onto the home stretch (only 1km of pavement!) to Windsor Reserve in Devonport. This course will surely leave a smile on the face of mum, dad and the kids!

Aid Stations: 1

Course Terrain: Sand, flat rock, minimal boulders

Water Interaction: There should not be any serious water interaction on this course, but this is a coastal event and participants should be aware that water interaction could be a possibility.

Bay Scrambler – 11km Run / Walk

The Bay Scrambler is also a course designed for coastal running first-timers, but those after a few more k’s! The Bay Scramble shorter course will take participants from Milford Beach south along the beach, around the rocky trail to Takapuna Beach, south along Takapuna Beach, around the rocks to Cheltenham Beach and then onto the home stretch (only 1km of pavement!) to Windsor Reserve in Devonport. This course will give a newbee a run for their money, but also a grin from ear-to-ear!

To: Windsor Reserve, King Edward Parade, Devonport

Aid Stations: 2

Course Terrain: Sand, flat rock, small and large boulders, grass, 4WD track

Water Interaction: There should not be any serious water interaction on this course, but this is a coastal event and participants should be aware that water interaction could be a possibility.

Mini Monty – 17km Run / Walk

The Mini Monty is the mid course in the Coastal Challenge Series line-up and a course where you’ll ‘see it all’, without a crazy number of kilometres! The Mini Monty course will take participants from Browns Bay south along the beach and around the rocks eventually getting to Milford where you’ll have a short wade or swim across the estuary mouth. You’ll then be back on your feet and heading south again along Milford beach, around the rocky trail to Takapuna, then south along Takapuna Beach, around the rocks to Cheltenham Beach and then onto the home stretch (only 1km of pavement!) to Windsor Reserve in Devonport. A great course, with a tad more water interaction than the two shorter course options.

To: Windsor Reserve, King Edward Parade, Devonport

Aid Stations: 3

Course Terrain: Sand, flat rock, small and large boulders, estuary/water

Water Interaction: There will be a short wade / swim through the estuary mouth as you come into Milford. Besides this, there is not a large amount of water interaction on the remaining course.

Mid Monty – 22km Run

The Mid Monty is one of the big-boys in the Coastal Challenge Series line-up and a course that’ll test the seasoned runner! The Mid Monty course takes participants from Long Bay along the beach and rocky coastline to Browns Bay and on to Milford. Once arriving at Milford you’ll have a short wade or swim across the estuary mouth before getting back on your feet and heading south again along Milford Beach. Once around the rocky trail and along Takapuna and Cheltenham Beaches you’re then on the final home stretch (only 1km of pavement!) to Windsor Reserve in Devonport. A great course and adventure, with a tad more water interaction than the two shorter courses!

Aid Stations: 4

Course Terrain: Sand, flat rock, small and large boulders, grass, 4WD track, estuary/water

Water Interaction: There will be some interaction with the water on this course and a few small stream crossings up to around waist depth.

Full Monty – 33km Run

The Full Monty, the pearl in the Coastal Challenge Series line-up and the course every Coastal Challenge enthusiast aspires to! The Full Monty course will begin at Arkles Bay in Whangaparoa with a short run before you’re head down on the first of two estuary swims around Okura. Once you’re out of the water and had a shake off you’re heading along Long Bay beach and then around the rocky coastline to Browns Bay and on to Milford. Once arriving at Milford you’ll have another short wade or swim across the estuary mouth before heading south again along Milford Beach. Once around the rocky trail and along Takapuna and Cheltenham Beaches you’ll be on the final home stretch (only 1km of pavement!) to Windsor Reserve in Devonport. It’s called the Full Monty for a reason, but one hell of a race!

Course Terrain: Water, sand, flat rock, small and large boulders

Water Interaction: You’ll be swimming at the start, be ready for it all! There will also be a short wade as you come into Milford Beach. Competent swimmers only.

TeamsWe suggest all team members register and begin at Arkles Bay. Then leap frog your way down the coastline, transitioning at aid stations as you go.

Safety: There will be ample water-based support on the water (4 x Surf Life Saving rescue boats and lifeguards on stand up paddle boards), with a particular focus around the two river crossings. If you’re in trouble on either of these two sections, please raise your hand and our water safety crew will be very happy to provide assistance in getting you across. You will not be disqualified if you fit into this category, but please don’t use the water safety crew to get a free ride, and save you some energy – they’ll keep you in the boat for longer!

The ratings below are the minimum experience level required to participant in each specific event:

  • 6km run/walk – First time
  • 11km run/walk – First time
  • 17km run/walk – Beginner
  • 22km run – Beginner
  • 33km run – Intermediate

Each aid station will have the following:

  • Loaded Electrolyte drink
  • Basic first aid kit
  • Vaseline
  • Sunscreen
  • Bananas (every second Aid Station)

Note: While we will have plenty of aid stations on all course options, we advise (as we would with any off-road event) that you come prepared with your own supplies. We recommend bringing your own hydration-pack complete with liquid (minimum 2 litres), food, thermal top and a basic first aid kit.
