In total, there are approximately 90 different bird species to be seen and heard around Tawharanui. Including the Takehe, North Island brown kiwi, North Island robin, Pateke (brown teal, which is the fourth rarest waterfowl in the world), Kakariki (red crowned parakeet), Tieke (saddleback), Bellbird, Oi (grey faced petrel) and Kaka just to name a handful.
